About Joe
Joe is Executive Chairman and leads our Corporate Development at Automata, having previously been one of our early lead investors whilst at Octopus Ventures, one of the most active European VC funds and multi-time Automata investor. He’s based in our London office and his 28 years in healthtech and life sciences, both as investor and founder, gives him the experience to manage our relationships with strategic accounts, identify potential new markets and accounts, manage our wider advisory board and represent the business in various political and public forums.
Joe occasionally admits to having an MSc in logistics and supply chain management from Cranfield so loves nothing more than seeing workcell automation in action and the impact this can have both in terms of science and for patients. Prior to Automata and Octopus Ventures, Joe spent 18 years in healthcare strategy and technology consulting, leading the UK healthcare practice for Ernst & Young (EY). He also briefly led the EMEA market team for Google Health and ran his own Healthtech VC.
In addition to his role with us, Joe is a non-executive director at Holland & Barrett (the European wellness retailer), leads a £500m impact fund of funds and has Board roles with some of the strongest global health and life sciences scale-ups – including Lightship clinical trials, Ufonia, Thriva and Mettle, the platform for mens mental health co-founded by Bear Grylls.
Joe is a proactive advocate for impact investing and the significant role that risk capital can play in developing affordable and accessible healthcare systems around the world. He has contributed to a number of thought leadership reports on the topic of healthtech, recently as a guest lecturer at Imperial University on the role of the NHS in Venture Capital, and was recently published in “Resilient Health: Leveraging Technology and Social Innovations to Transform Healthcare for COVID-19 Recovery and Beyond”.
Joe lives in Bath, has had a season ticket at Chelsea for nearly 35 years but now spends most weekends on kids sports touchlines or battling physics to improve his triathlon times.
